Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students’ Council meets monthly to keep school spirit high, provide input on school matters, raise money for and purchase extra resources for student use and to make charitable donations.

In the past, the Students’ Council contributed to a number of charities including: donations to the Canned Food Drive, Pennies for Portions, Sock Drive for The Mission and the building of benches around trees in the yard. They also saved money for the new addition of two basketball nets.

The Intramurals for All committee plans and runs the weekly intramural program. This program aims to engage all students in fun and healthy activities. Liv2Luv is an organization of students and one staff mentor. This group has a mandate to make the school and the community a better place. This year, the group has planned a number of fundraising efforts to build a school in Kenya.

J. H. Putman's most impressive educational resource is its staff. J.H. Putman staff believe that all our students can learn and can, with support, reach the provincial standards. Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications as well as additional qualifications in Computers in Education, English as A Second Language, French As a Second Language, Music, Physical Education, Special Education and Visual Arts. They actively participate in numerous professional development activities, and we recognize their initiative by providing and supporting opportunities for further professional growth. All staff are part of a community effort to reach every student.

Our dedicated School Council meets monthly to focus on supporting student achievement and well-being, and to support the School Improvement Plan. They contribute funds to enhance our academic programs as well as other special projects. In 2017-2018 a major financial goal will focus on getting parents more involved in the school, sharing their knowledge and strengths.

We also have many parents who volunteer their time to help run our lunch programs, breakfast programs, various clubs and assist with field trips and sporting events. Our thanks go out to all of our parent community for their help and support.

We recognize the following community partners: Michael Brackenbury, who runs our gardening initiative, The City of Ottawa, who have provided funding for healthy schools initiatives including our active transportation project, The Rotary Club, which awards the 4 Way Test plaque each year to a student in Grade 8, Algonquin College who provide Child and Youth Care students to work with our students and Edward King, a former student, who also offers an award each year. At J.H. Putman, our efforts are supported by our School Resource Officer (SRO) Constable Vincent Grant.
